AODES PathCross 550: S vs L, Base vs Premium

The four AODES PathCross 550 trims compared from AODES Canada's product pages: seating, steering, wheels and tires, standard equipment, and the towing figure AODES hasn't published yet.

The PathCross 550 is AODES's entry full-size ATV. It comes in four trims that share one engine and frame. For where it fits in the wider AODES lineup, see North AB Trails' AODES lineup overview, a sister site we also publish. This page goes into the differences between the four trims.

What every PathCross 550 shares

  • 495cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine, 38 hp and 34 ft-lb (AODES's figures), with Delphi fuel injection
  • CVTech CVT with low, high, neutral, reverse and park, and selectable 2WD, 4WD and 4WD with a locking front differential
  • Independent dual A-arm suspension front and rear, with oil-damped shocks and adjustable spring preload
  • Dual vented disc brakes front and rear with 2-piston hydraulic calipers
  • Width 46 in (about 1,170 mm), wheelbase 57.5 in (about 1,460 mm) and 10 in (about 255 mm) of ground clearance
  • 20 L fuel tank; racks rated 75 lb front and 150 lb rear (about 34 kg and 68 kg)
  • 3,500 lb winch, hitch receiver, LED lights, turn signals, mirrors, a 12-volt plug and USB ports, all included

The Premium trims' 8" touch screen lets you set the power steering mode (soft, medium or firm) and tire size, and shows maintenance reminders, fault codes, rpm, speed, and fuel and oil levels, according to AODES.

What the differences mean

  • Power steering is the big one. Only the Premium trims have it. On a long day of fencing, in deep snow, or with a plow on the front, steering effort adds up fast. If you'll work the machine hard, ride both before you decide.
  • S or L: the L is about 160 mm longer and rated for a passenger, with the same wheelbase. Only carry a passenger on a machine rated for two.
  • Tires: the Premium's 26" tires are slightly taller than the Base's 25". That adds a little clearance under the axles, not under the frame (AODES lists 10 in for all four). If you change tire size, the Premium lets you tell the display.

Gaps to check before you buy

  • Towing: every PathCross 550 page lists towing capacity as "information not available yet". Don't plan on towing with a 550 until the dealer can show you the rated figure for that unit.
  • Curb weight isn't listed for the 550s, so you can't work out its payload from the product pages.
  • "3 year manufacturer warranty": the product pages say this, but the AODES Canada warranty chart covers different parts for different lengths of time. See the warranty chart, part by part.

AODES Canada notes that specs and colours may vary. Figures here are from its Canadian product pages as checked on the date below.
